Davinici Resolve 12

(free version)

It’s hard to find anything wrong with this free version of an incredibly powerful editing and colouring app. I’ve used it for a number of projects with the help of an ever growing collection of tutorials. Only annoying things are the lack of full screen playback while in the edit and the OFX plugins seems to be the most expensive of all. The Resolve 12 update gives you an Adobe-like refresh on the look. The tracking and stabilization are still the best I’ve come across.

 Apple Photos

Having been a long term ‘Aperture and Photoshop combo’ user the news that Aperture had been ditched for what, on first glance, looks like an iPad friendly version of iPhoto didn’t go down well.

For anyone who’s been through the mill experience of cross-grading to the latest Logic Pro of Final Cut I’ll probably have to say no more. Photos will probably be a great app…in a year or two. Once everyone goes El Capitan, moan a lot on forums and the 3rd party extensions options pile up.

Anyway, I love Aperture’s user interface. The latest version hasn’t crashed on me. The side bar folder organization, the smart albums etc – great. It’s got all the Insta-ya-photos ability and pics can slide into Photoshop with ease. I don’t have the time to cross over to something that does the same thing but maybe not quite as well. Until Aperture is no longer OS compatible.

Then there’s Lightroom.

My first experience of Photos was to import 12,000 photos from an iPad. Photos crashed repeatedly and I ended up using ImageCapture – a long forgotten piece of software that has survived the Apple years. It’s simple and it works.
